The village of Air Papan is a secluded sleepy seaside area with a 3 km long beach set in between the hills about 15 Km north of Mersing, Johor, Malaysia. The hills sport a variety of flora and trees. As you drive in from the main road you pass a number of rice paddies where one can see egrets feeding on the water-life such as frogs and small fishes etc..
Other than a few properties and a mosque in the village beach-side area the remainder are dotted around the area.
There are a number of home-stay and resort hotels in the area, some with swimming pools and facilities. Many advertise facilities such as BBQ pits, karaoke rooms, fishing rod and cycling and snorkelling equipment. There are also Beach Chalets, with air-con, a few meters from the beach and which can be hired at reasonable rates.
There are lovely views along the coastline and out to sea which makes one want to just relax on the lovely sandy beach.
Every 1st of May the "Pesta Air Papan" - Air Papan Festival- is celebrated featuring cultural shows, games, food etc and which is well attended
On the waterfront are a few stalls selling snacks, food, swimming aids, kites and other items usually found at sea-sides. The car-park is ample and there are two sets of public toilets. The most recently built is currently locked up, not in use and the second much older is in quite a dilapidated condition as of end 2011 and for which a small charge is levied to use it.
